From here on the sketches was instead a set of thumbnails set around the idea of how this dragon could resemble a sun. Essentially it boiled down to the wings and horns, and eventually the core features were that she had a pair of wings attached to her legs, and a pair grafted to her back, with 5 horns that pointed outward in a circular fashion    

I also expanded on the backstory while drawing the final image. The dragon (now named Merralion) was a essentially a guardian to travlers seeking to enter the mainland of the continent and helped people through the great dessert by blocking out the sun with her wings.

Eventually she guided a group of foreign humans through the Sandsea, which would later be the first step that led to a great catastrophe on the main continent. Feeling guilty for having set the event in motion, she chose instead to guard the area that led to the mainland make sure no other people find their way through by tunneling underground so no one would see her silhouette when she flew.
